Terraced Masonry Retaining Walls - Design and Layout
PLANING A WELL BUILT RETAINING WALL
A retaining wall is a serious structural wall. The primary function of a retaining wall is to support the soils behind it and any loads or weight above. Bongiorno's Contracting installs retaining wall to manage slopes on roadways and parking lots. We specialize in slope protection and erosion control, and develop hillsides into functional property. These walls must be engineered, properly reinforced and should be built by a professional. They require a higher level of design, analysis and on-site supervision. Retaining walls solve major site problems, and should be designed and built for a minimum service life of 50 years.
An area of design that affects many site applications is the use of terraced walls. What is important to consider is that the upper terrace wall can put pressure on the lower terrace if the walls are to close together. Multiple terraced walls in close proximity to each other, can have structual stability issues related to the lower walls not having the capacity to carry the loads developed by the upper walls.
As a rule of thumb, in order for the upper terrace wall to not cause loading on the lower terrace wall, the minium distance between the wall terraces must be at least equal to twice the height of the lower wall.
